Energy mix, technological change, and the environment

چکیده
Abstract This paper studies the relationship between energy mix and environment using a theoretical framework in which two alternative sources are considered: fossil fuels (dirty energy) renewable (clean energy). We find that positive aggregate productivity shock increases consumption emissions but reduces intensity per unit of output as increases, is, carbon procyclical countercyclical. Second, an efficiency improvement provokes “rebound effect” above 100% (the backfire effect), resulting rise pollutant by increasing use. Third, technological leads to reduction fuel, also implies slow-down adoption sources. Finally, we consider case decentralized economy government chooses optimal specific tax on fuel maximize social welfare. show “second-best” policy is highly effective correcting negative effects environmental externality able almost achive centralized outcome.

reform of energy subsidies, technological change and the energy consumption phase in the iranian economy
abstractthe reform of energy subsidies has affected economic growth, as a result of household and firms’ behavior. however, despite the energy consumption and economic growth decrease in the short run, it is expected that economic growth will increase as a result of an adjustment in economic agents’ behavior over the mid- and long-terms. as is appropriate with these changes, energy consumption ...
متن کاملEnergy taxes and endogenous technological change
This paper studies the effects of a tax on energy use in a growth model where market structure is endogenous and jointly determined with the rate of technological change. Because this economy does not exhibit the scale effect (a positive relation between TFP growth and aggregate R&D), the tax has no effect on the steady-state growth rate. It has, however, important transitional effects that giv...

متن کاملThe Induced Innovation Hypothesis and Energy-Saving Technological Change
We develop a methodology for testing Hick’s induced innovation hypothesis by estimating a product-characteristics model of energy-using consumer durables, augmenting the hypothesis to allow for the influence of government regulations. For the products we explored, the evidence suggests: (i) the rate of overall innovation was independent of energy prices and regulations, (ii) the direction of in...
